Exercise will help you control your weight and improve your body shape and posture.
Perhaps what you need now is the motivation to get started, and it’s not as hard as you might think - the following ideas will give you a nudge in the right direction.
GENTLY does it!
Gently ease yourself in an exercise programme. Build-up gradually to 30-60 minutes four times a week, you need to feel a little out of breath to know you are working hard enough. Every hour you dedicate to fitness is an hour well spent!
- Wake up ten minutes early. Lie in bed and stretch all your legs, arms, back, neck, hands, feet, everything - feels great!
- Join a gym, either by yourself, with your spouse or a friend.
- Go for a brisk 30 minute walk at lunchtime, get some fresh air and feel that blood coursing through your veins.
- Engage the services of a personal trainer - find out how to get fit the professional way.
- For a daily workout, use your TV as a fitness partner with the help of a few DVDs - pilates, yoga, tai chi, stretching, etc.
- Park your car further away from your workplace and walk.
- Desk-bound? Keep moving! Tap your feet, swing your legs, fidget and stand when you use the telephone.
- Use the stairs more often - great for a workout!
- Join a rambling club and get out at the weekends with fellow walkers.
- Play fun games with your children more frequently.
- Treat yourself to a regular massage to help keep your muscles in balance.
- Make sure you ENJOY what you do - if it’s not fun, the desire will dry up.
Muscles that are accustomed to a ‘quiet life’ won’t know what’s hit them if you suddenly start a busy exercise programme, this is when you are most vulnerable to injury. Introduce your body to exercise gradually and consider the follow advice.
Stretch and Balance. Tension and long periods of inactivity can cause your muscles to contract and tighten. Regular stretching helps to keep you limber and less prone to injury when you exercise. Among its many benefits, stretching reduces muscle tension, improves circulation, increases flexibility, reduces stress and fatigue, and improves mental alertness. Remember to stretch before and after any type of exercise, as well as on the days you choose not to exercise. A five minute stretching workout is the perfect way to start every day and again to help release tension before you go to bed. Practicing yoga is a great way to stretch your muscles and maintain flexibility. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll find yourself stopping for a good stretch throughout the day... why else do cats looks so content!
Tone and Strengthen. In addition to helping you look more toned, building muscle mass also has the advantage that you’ll burn more calories for every pound of muscle that you add. Try weight-lifting, resistance training, or pilates at least twice a week. By incorporating these simple fitness rules, any additional exercise you choose to do will reap larger rewards.
